A causa di un'estrema fotosensibilità la loro pelle si ustiona alla semplice esposizione alla luce diurna. Il rischio di tumori diviene così elevato insieme a quello di un invecchiamento precoce. Dapprima riluttante ad accettare la veridicità dei problemi della figlia, Dan ha in seguito deciso di affiancarsi alla moglie nel realizzare la XP Society, un'associazione no profit che mette in comunicazione le famiglie che hanno figli con lo stesso problema. Hanno anche creato Camp Sundown, un luogo di aggregazione estiva in cui i pazienti giovani e adulti possano ogni anno ritrovarsi per condividere un'esperienza di vita all'aperto...notturna.
